1 Year Wonder

1977 Pontiac Can Am, a limited edition LeMans with a 400 cubic inch T/A 6.6 engine, customized at Motortown, a shop run by Jim Wangers of GTO fame.  In his book, "Glory Days" he explained the car was built as a special order white LeMans Sport coupe at Pontiac with the Grand Prix instrument panel, the T/A 6.6 engine, and the special Turbo Hydra-matic transmission, then trucked to the Motortown facility in Troy where the hole was cut in the hood, the Trans Am shaker hood scoop was added, an integrated deck spoiler was installed, and the die-cut decal striping attached, then returned to Pontiac.  Originally planned for 2,500 cars, potential orders went to 5,000.  But after a little more than 1,100 cars, the rear deck spoiler tooling cracked and the orders were put on hold.  Word was that in '78 the Grand Am was going to be down-sized, and orders for that model went up, limiting the supply of the instrument panels for the special order LeMans.  Pontiac pulled the plug less than a week after the spoiler tool cracked, shipping the already built LeMans Sport Coupes minus the Can Am features, ending the program in under a year, resulting in few examples like this one still on the road.
